As North Carolinians, we are proud of our state’s record of innovation and excellence in advancing high quality early care and education for all young children. In fact, NC serves as a model across the country for many of its early childhood initiatives – including Smart Start, NC PreK, T.E.A.C.H. and Star-rated child care licensing. These programs have been repeatedly recognized nationwide as being well designed and implemented and producing positive gains for our young children.
Governor Pat McCrory recognized Pre-K as the fourth pillar of education in the State of the Union address, and in his budget proposed expanding NC Pre-K to serve 5,000 additional young children. North Carolina’s Appropriations Committees will soon begin reviewing the state’s early childhood education programs and making critical funding decisions.
